Disney Announced Big Changes at D23 2026 — Should You Wait to Visit Walt Disney World?

Disney shared a lot of exciting news at D23 2026, and as someone who loves seeing what's coming to Walt Disney World, there were definitely announcements that got me excited.

Villains Land? Yes, please.

Dreamfinder returning with Figment? I'm excited to see what Disney does with this.

And I'm very curious to see how areas like Piston Peak and Monstropolis come together.

But after watching the announcements and going back through everything Disney shared, I was left with one big thought:

We still don't know when a lot of this is actually going to open.

And from a vacation-planning perspective, that matters.

So if you saw all the D23 news and immediately started wondering whether you should postpone your Disney World vacation until all of these new attractions open, my answer right now is pretty simple:

I wouldn't.

D23 Gave Us More Details — But Not Many Opening Dates

One thing to keep in mind is that several of the major projects Disney discussed at D23 2026 aren't brand-new announcements. Disney itself describes this year's showcase as providing updates on projects first announced at D23 in 2024.

We did get quite a few new details.

At Magic Kingdom, we learned more about Piston Peak, including Cars Ridge Run Rally and Miss Fritter's Daredevil Spin-Along. Disney also gave us a better idea of what to expect from Villains Land, including a Maleficent coaster and an attraction centered around the Magic Mirror.

Over at Animal Kingdom, Disney shared new details about Indiana Jones and the Myth of the Jade Serpent and Antonio's Fiesta de Encanto. And one announcement longtime Disney fans will probably be very happy about: Disney says it is bringing the Yeti on Expedition Everest back to life.

At EPCOT, Disney announced that Figment and Dreamfinder will embark on a new journey together, and Spaceship Earth is also getting updates.

There is a LOT happening.

What we don't have for many of these projects, however, are firm opening dates.

And that's the part families planning vacations need to pay attention to.

Monstropolis Is One Announcement That Could Affect 2027 Trips

One of the announcements where Disney did give us a timeline was Monstropolis at Hollywood Studios.

Disney says the new Monsters, Inc.-themed land will open in 2027. When it opens, guests will be able to see Mike and Sulley in a new theater show, visit Harryhausen's and grab pizza at Archie's Scare Pig Pizza.

But there's an important detail if you're planning a trip specifically because you're excited about Monsters, Inc.:

The entire project isn't necessarily opening at once.

The much-talked-about Door Coaster is planned as a later phase.

So if riding that coaster is the reason you're considering a 2027 Disney trip, I wouldn't book a specific week assuming it will be operating just because Monstropolis is open.

That's where an announced year and an actual opening date can make a big difference when you're planning a vacation.

Carousel of Progress Has a More Concrete Timeline

We also received a more specific timeframe for the updated Carousel of Progress.

Disney announced that Jamie Lee Curtis and Bryan Cranston will join the attraction as the mom and dad, along with an updated 1980s scene, beginning in late spring 2027.

So that's something families traveling around that period can actually start taking into consideration.

For many of the larger projects, though, we're still waiting.

What Am I Most Excited About?

Out of everything Disney shared, I think Villains Land is still the project I'm most excited about. We've never really had an entire area dedicated to the Disney villains, and I'm really curious to see what Disney does when they can build a whole land around the darker side of those stories.

I'm also excited about the changes coming to Animal Kingdom. My daughter and I love Encanto and sing the songs all the time, so I'm really looking forward to seeing that world brought to life in a Disney park.

And then there's Indiana Jones. I was excited about this one until they mentioned snakes. Snakes are probably my biggest fear, so all I could think was, “Why did it have to be snakes?” 😂 I'm sure I'll still ride it. Whether I'll keep my eyes open the entire time is another question.

That's part of why I enjoyed the D23 announcements. There really is a lot coming that I'm excited to experience. My hesitation isn't about the projects themselves — it's about planning around them when we don't know when many of them will actually open.

So, Should You Wait to Visit Disney World?

For most families, I don't think so.

There will almost always be something new coming to Walt Disney World.

If you keep postponing your vacation until Disney finishes everything currently under construction or announced, there's a pretty good chance that by the time those projects open, Disney will have announced the next thing that's coming.

Instead, I would plan your vacation based on what your family wants to experience and what will actually be available during your travel dates.

If you've been planning a Disney trip for 2026 or 2027 and your kids are excited about riding Guardians of the Galaxy, seeing Cinderella Castle, meeting characters, experiencing Galaxy's Edge or finally riding their favorite attractions, I wouldn't cancel those plans because Villains Land is coming someday.

Those experiences are available now.

When Would I Consider Waiting?

There are situations where I think waiting could make sense.

If one of these new attractions is a major reason for your trip, that's different.

For example, if you have a Monsters, Inc.-obsessed child and the Door Coaster is the thing your family is most excited about, I would probably wait until Disney announces a firm opening date before planning a trip around it.

The same could eventually be true for Villains Land, Piston Peak, Encanto or Indiana Jones.

And if you're already debating between something like a 2027 and 2028 vacation and don't have a strong preference, then yes, upcoming additions can absolutely be part of that decision.

But that's different from telling a family with a vacation already planned:

“Cancel it. You need to wait for all of this.”

I don't think we have enough information to make that recommendation.

Announced Doesn't Necessarily Mean Opening Soon

This is probably my biggest takeaway from D23.

I'm genuinely excited about what Disney is building. Villains Land in particular sounds like it could be an incredible addition to Magic Kingdom, and I'm looking forward to learning more about Piston Peak, Tropical Americas and the changes coming throughout Walt Disney World.

But I'm separating my excitement as a Disney fan from my recommendations as someone helping families plan vacations.

An announcement doesn't necessarily mean an attraction is opening soon.

Until Disney gives us firm opening dates, I wouldn't build an entire vacation around when we think something might open.

And I'm deliberately not predicting dates.

Could some of these projects still be several years away? Of course.

Could timelines change as construction progresses? Absolutely.

But rather than guessing that Villains Land will open in 2029, 2030 or any other year, I'd rather wait until Disney tells us.

My Advice for Families Planning Disney World Right Now

If you're currently planning a Walt Disney World vacation, keep planning it.

Pay attention to confirmed closures and construction that will actually affect your travel dates. Watch for firm opening dates as Disney releases them. And if there's one particular upcoming attraction your family absolutely has to experience, then consider whether waiting makes sense.

But don't feel like you've suddenly chosen the “wrong” year to visit Disney because you saw all the new things announced at D23.

There is already plenty to experience at Walt Disney World, and there is always going to be another great, big, beautiful tomorrow on the horizon.

And personally?

I'm excited to watch all of this take shape. I just want Disney to give us a few more dates next time.
